Proposed circus elephant measure would have prohibited circuses performing with elephants.


UPDATE: Dane County, Wisconsin, Board of Supervisors votes not to ban circuses with elephants at this time

At the Dane County Board of Supervisors Public Works Committee meeting last night (2/21/12), the Committee voted unanimously to “postpone indefinitely" consideration of a proposed county ordinance which would prevent circuses with elephants from performing in Dane County, including the Alliant Arena in Madison. Representatives from the Zor Shrine Circus and the Circus World Museum attended the Committee meeting and answered questions for the Committee members prior to their vote.

The County Board of Supervisors is up for election in April 2012, so the proposed ordinance may be brought before the Committee again sometime in the future. The CFA, OABA, and the circus industry will continue to monitor activity in Dane County in the event that the Public Works Committee decides to examine the issue of performing elephants further

..Moonlight elephant walk returns to downtown L.A. as circus hits town..

There's a lot to be seen on the streets of downtown Los Angeles on any given night -– but a parade of elephants stands out even there.Eight Asian elephants from the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus made their annual tail-to-trunk trek through the streets of downtown Los Angeles just after midnight Monday after arriving by train in the city of Vernon. Leading a group of 10 show horses and accompanied by their trainers, the pachyderm parade began at 25th and Alameda streets and lasted three miles before reaching Staples Center, the site of the upcoming Ringling Bros. shows slated for this week.

The elephant walk is meant to drum up attention for the circus' "Fully Charged" performance, which begins Wednesday at the Staples Center and runs until Sunday. The circus will tour the Southland for the next month: performing in Anaheim from July 27-Aug. 7 and in Ontario from Aug. 10-14.

We are so disappointed that the wonderful opportunity presented by Tai's role in "Water for Elephants" to raise awareness and funds for elephant conservation and Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV) is being exploited by animal rights extremist groups.

We are unwavering in our commitment to elephants. We stand by our care and training methods. We are proud of our contributions to elephant welfare and conservation.

Animal rights extremist groups are using Tai’s role in Water for Elephants as a vehicle to take advantage of her celebrity to further their efforts to remove elephants and all exotic animals from entertainment. These groups have no basis of knowledge or experience working with elephants. They have an agenda and a history of using less than honest means to achieve their goals.

The video shows heavily edited and very short snippets, obviously taken surreptitiously six years ago, purporting mistreatment of our elephants. If there was truly any abuse going on why wait six minutes, much less six years?

None of the footage being shown was taken during Tai’s training for Water for Elephants. Tai’s celebrity and the popularity of the movie seem to be the motivation for the extremist groups to garner publicity for themselves and their cause. As our work in the movie proves you can make something look like anything to suit your purposes. That is why they call it “movie magic”.

Rest assured that we will continue to provide Tai and all of our elephants with the love and excellent care they deserve.

Small option price would hold the land while zoo experts weigh its value for elephants

The Oregon Zoo elephants are one step closer to getting their just desserts. Zoo officials plan to establish an off-site reserve, and last Thursday the Metro Council voted unanimously to allow the expenditure of Metro monies to buy options on land suitable for a reserve.


One such site, probably the best one located to date, is the land surrounding the former Roslyn Lake.

“It holds a lot of promise,” Metro Councilor Carlotta Collette said. “It has a lot of things that would really be exciting for us.”

Buying an option for a small fraction of the eventual purchase price allows Metro to place a hold on the sale of several suitable sites until it is determined which site is best and a purchase price is negotiated.

At the present time, only the Roslyn Lake site is in need of an option because the other suitable site, near the Willamette River in Clackamas County, is already owned by Metro.

The Oregon Zoo is “a world leader in elephant husbandry,” Collette said as she began a presentation to the council last week.

She also praised Mike Keele, director of elephant habitats, for being what she called “probably the No.-1 zoo elephant expert in the world,” and she said No. 2 would be Oregon Zoo Director Kim Smith.

Not only with these zoo officials, Collette said, but also with the people who voted for the zoo bond measure in 2008, elephant care is a high priority — providing funding to explore and plan for an off-site remote elephant center.

“We want to have two herds of elephants,” Collette told the council, “and we would be able to maintain them the way they would (live) in the wild
“The point of today’s resolution is to enable staff to take an option on land that could then become our off-site elephant reserve.”


The option is necessary to give zoo staff sufficient time (put any potential sales on hold) to examine sites that meet some of the criteria and begin to seek funding. Metro staff members have been talking with PGE people about the potential purchase, Collette said Monday night.

Councilor Rex Burkholder seemed pleased with the project proposal, noting the zoo is helping to improve elephants’ quality of life and “rescue a species rapidly becoming endangered in the wild.”

“If successful,” he said, “this (project) will become an amazing resource for the region and a place we can all be proud of . . .

“This will be a leading activity for the country, maybe even internationally.”

After attending the foundation board’s meeting, Councilor Shirley Craddick told the council the board was very excited about the project.

“As the representative for the east part of the (Metro) region, I am sure there will be many people who live in that part of the region very excited to have this, (especially) if that property you are researching (Roslyn Lake) becomes the property that we hope it will be.”

The 2008 bond measure didn’t have enough funding to operate an off-site facility, just a feasibility study and purchase of land. But zoo staff members plan to secure private funding through the Oregon Zoo Foundation for construction.

The project will take a number of years to develop, even if the Roslyn Lake site is chosen. That site already has some of the facilities needed in the remote center.

“This could be really nice for Sandy,” Collette said. “It’s not open to the public all the time, but we want to be good neighbors.”
